Calls for Temporary Solution to Bridge Closure that Cuts Community in Half

During the public meeting arranged by Janet Finch-Saunders MS, residents of Betws y Coed and Bro Garmon made clear that they need an urgent temporary solution to the closure of Sappers Bridge.

The bridge, which links both sides of the community, was closed suddenly in December 2021, and has remained shut ever since.

The closure is having a detrimental impact on residents and local businesses. Hotels are losing bookings and are facing having to close permanently due to the collapse in the number of customers.

Janet Finch-Saunders MS was joined by Cllr Ifor Thomas, Chair of Bro Garmon Community Council, and Mr David Walker, Snowdonia Society, so to listen to local views. All other stakeholders, including Conwy County Borough Council were invited, but did not attend.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, Janet said:

“There is a clear message. Local residents and businesses cannot afford to wait until Conwy County Borough Council decide on a long-term solution.

“The livelihoods of many businesses are at risk, so we all need to work together to have a short-term measure in place, such as a temporary bridge or shuttle service.

“Questions also need to be answered as to how the bridge has been allowed to reach such a dangerous state.  As has been made clear tonight, serious problems don’t arise overnight!”

Mr David Walker, Snowdonia Society added:

“Hearing the strength of opinion in the community, it is clear that for public safety and local business, a temporary solution needs to be found as quickly as possible.”
