Eluned Morgan MS, Minister for Health and Social Services, Welsh Government, writing in relation to vascular services in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), has stated that she is seeking further assurance from the NHS Wales Executive and the Health Board that progress is being made.

The Minister’s decision to challenge NHS Wales and BCUHB came in response to two questions by Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy:

  1. What plans does the Minister have to review whether upholding the centralisation of vascular services at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is safe?
  2. Will the Minister liaise with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to develop a plan that helps restore public confidence in North Wales vascular care?

Commenting on the state of vascular care in North Wales, Janet said:

“There have been a number of deaths among vascular patients in North Wales, so residents need to know that the service is safe to use.

“I welcome the fact that the Health Minister is challenging the NHS Wales Executive and the Health Board to provide assurance that progress is being made.

“However, the reputation of the centralised service is so tarnished that the Minister may need to accept that they only way to restore public confidence is by breaking up vascular care.”

Dywedodd Eluned Morgan AS, y Gweinidog Iechyd a Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol, Llywodraeth Cymru, wrth ysgrifennu mewn perthynas â gwasanaethau fasgwlaidd ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr (BIPBC), ei bod yn ceisio sicrwydd pellach gan Weithrediaeth GIG Cymru a'r Bwrdd Iechyd bod cynnydd yn cael ei wneud.

Daeth penderfyniad y Gweinidog i herio GIG Cymru a BIPBC mewn ymateb i ddau gwestiwn gan Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy:

  1. Pa gynlluniau sydd gan y Gweinidog i adolygu a yw dal ati i ganoli gwasanaethau fasgwlaidd yn Ysbyty Glan Clwyd yn ddiogel?
  2. A fydd y Gweinidog yn cysylltu â Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr i ddatblygu cynllun sy'n helpu i adfer hyder y cyhoedd yng ngofal fasgwlaidd yn y Gogledd?

Wrth sôn am gyflwr gofal fasgwlaidd yn y Gogledd, dywedodd Janet:

“Cafwyd nifer o farwolaethau ymhlith cleifion fasgwlaidd yn y Gogledd, felly mae angen i drigolion wybod bod y gwasanaeth yn ddiogel i'w ddefnyddio.

"Rwy'n croesawu'r ffaith bod y Gweinidog Iechyd yn herio Gweithrediaeth GIG Cymru a'r Bwrdd Iechyd i roi sicrwydd bod cynnydd yn cael ei wneud.

"Fodd bynnag, mae enw da'r gwasanaeth sydd wedi’i ganoli wedi ei bardduo i’r fath raddau fel y bydd yn rhaid i’r Gweinidog dderbyn o bosib mai dim ond trwy rannu’r gofal fasgwlaidd y gellir adennill hyder y cyhoedd."
