Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and Shadow Minister for Housing, has criticised the Welsh Government for owning an empty home in Llanfairfechan.
The Welsh Government owns two properties in Llanfairfechan: 12 & 13 Glen View. Julie James MS, Minister for Climate Change, has written to the Member for Aberconwy stating that “One property is tenanted and opportunities for occupation are being pursued on the other.”
Commenting on the properties, Janet said:
“At a time when Conwy County alone has 593 people in all forms of temporary accommodation, of which 222 are children, it is scandalous that the Welsh Government has an empty home in Llanfairfechan.
“The 272 people, of which 82 are children, living in bed and breakfast accommodation in Conwy County deserve an explanation from the Minister for Climate Change as to why she has not ensured that the empty property is made a long term home.
“Even if the property was allocated to one person living in bed and breakfast, the saving would be considerable.
“Currently, a typical bed and breakfast placement will cost the Conwy Council £420 a week. Approximately £60 can be reclaimed in Housing Benefit. Therefore, the saving that can be made by saving a single person household from being placed in bed and breakfast accommodation is £360 x 52 weeks = £18,720 a year!
“As the Labour Minister has said herself, empty properties are a wasted housing resource that can become a blight on our communities. I trust that she will now take the positive step required to increase the housing supply in Llanfairfechan.”

"Hyd yn oed pe bai'r eiddo'n cael ei ddyrannu i un person sy'n byw mewn gwely a brecwast, byddai'n arbediad sylweddol.
"Ar hyn o bryd, bydd lleoliad gwely a brecwast arferol yn costio £420 yr wythnos i Gyngor Conwy. Gellir adennill tua £60 mewn Budd-dal Tai. Felly, gellid arbed £360 x 52 wythnos = £18,720 y flwyddyn drwy osgoi’r angen i roi un person mewn llety gwely a brecwast!
"Fel mae'r Gweinidog Llafur wedi dweud ei hun, mae eiddo gwag yn adnodd tai sy'n cael ei wastraffu a all droi'n fwrn ar ein cymunedau. Hyderaf y bydd hi nawr yn cymryd y cam cadarnhaol sydd ei angen i gynyddu'r cyflenwad tai yn Llanfairfechan."
