Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken of her delight after the Welsh Government confirmed that sections of the A470 in Dolwyddelan will be reduced from 30 mph to 20.

In 2018, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy launched a community campaign  on behalf of concerned residents to help reduce the limit and increase the safety within the village.

On 30 January 2023, Janet tabled the following Written Question to the Minister for Climate Change:

  • “Will the Minister outline what measures are being considered to curb speeding along the A470 in Dolwyddelan?”

The Deputy Minister for Climate Change answered on 6 February 2023:

  • “We routinely monitor speed data on the trunk road network to inform the need for engineering measures to improve compliance with the speed limit and improve road safety. This data is shared with Go Safe who are responsible for enforcement.  Following the change of default speed limit in residential areas to 20mph in September this year, we will monitor the speeds at this location to inform appropriate action.”

Janet tabled the following reply on 17 February:

  • “Further to WQ87280, will the Minister confirm that the speed limit in Dolwyddelan will be reduced from 30mph to 20mph?”

On 24 February, the Deputy Minister for Climate Change answered:

  • “The majority of the A470 at Dolwyddelan will become 20mph, however there are two sections where the criteria for 20mph are not met so we are proposing to keep them at 30mph by Road Traffic Orders: The proposed 30mph sections are shown on DataMapWales.  When the draft Orders for the 30mph are published in the next few weeks, the links will be added to the map, and people will have an opportunity to comment as part of the consultation stage.”

Commenting on the Deputy Minister’s response, Janet said:

“I was delighted to hear that the Welsh Government are going to impose a 20 mph speed limit for sections of the A470 in Dolwyddelan.

“After almost five years of running this community campaign, myself and the residents get to reap the rewards of a safer community with potentially less collisions on this vital stretch of road.

“I want to encourage all residents of the community to look on the Data Map Wales once the draft Orders have been uploaded by the Welsh Government so that they can review the two sections that will potentially be remaining at 30mph, and have their say during the consultation stage.”
