Janet Finch-Saunders MS has welcomed a recent breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology.
The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, and Shadow Minister for Climate Change, praised the announcement that comes after 70 years of research.
It comes as researchers at NIF, California, have succeeded in using 2.05MJ of energy to heat fuel with lasers, releasing 3.15MJ of energy.
The results show that it is indeed possible to use laser fusion to generate energy, a crucial proof of principle that will spur on research to develop the technology.
Commenting on the announcement, Janet said:
“A near-limitless, safe and clean source of fusion energy has long been the holy grail for physicists, and this development brings that goal one step closer.
“The nuclear industry is vital to achieving Net Zero here in Wales, including the potential of the Wylfa and Trawsfynydd sites.
“I have submitted a Written Question to the Welsh Government, asking what steps they are taking to explore the possibilities of nuclear fusion as part of our renewable energy mix”.
