Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken out in despair at the news that the Welsh Government are taking no steps to detect TB in live badgers in the Conwy Valley.

The disclosure was made to the Member for Aberconwy by the Welsh Labour Minister for Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths MS, who stated: “We do not have a programme for detecting TB in live badgers in the Conwy Valley”.

This comes at a time when the Welsh Government knows that there have been a cluster of breakdowns in the Conwy Valley area.  In fact, it is thought that there have been around 17 breakdowns in the area in 2022 alone.

Commenting on the Welsh Government’s lack of action to detect TB in wildlife, Janet said:

“Over 10,000 cattle are slaughtered for TB control annually in Wales.

“Bovine TB is having a devastating impact on the national and local agricultural sector, and the Welsh Government policy is leading to serious mental distress.  I have constituents who are terrified of hearing their herd’s TB test results.

“Since last year local farmers have been subjected to additional measures. They are cooperating, yet the Minister for Rural Affairs is not doing her share.

“It is appalling that the Minister has no programme for detecting TB in live badgers in the Conwy Valley.  It seems further evidence that the Welsh Government is unwilling to tackle the disease amongst wildlife, and in doing so, causing serious concern that the campaign to eradicate TB is going to be even harder to achieve”.

Notes:

Written Question by Janet Finch-Saunders MS:

“What action is the Welsh Government taking to detect TB in live badgers in the Conwy Valley?”

Response from Lesley Griffiths MS, Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales:

“We do not have a programme for detecting TB in live badgers in the Conwy Valley”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi siarad am ei dicter ynghylch y newyddion nad yw Llywodraeth Cymru yn cymryd camau i ganfod TB mewn moch daear byw yn Nyffryn Conwy.

Cafodd yr Aelod dros Aberconwy wybod hyn gan Lesley Griffiths AS, Gweinidog Llafur Cymru dros Faterion Gwledig, a ddywedodd: “Nid oes gennym raglen ar gyfer datgelu TB mewn moch daear byw yn Nyffryn Conwy.”

Daw hyn yn ystod cyfnod pan fo Llywodraeth Cymru yn gwybod bod clwstwr o achosion wedi bod yn Nyffryn Conwy. Yn wir, credir fod oddeutu 17 achos wedi bod yn yr ardal yn ystod 2022 yn unig.

Wrth roi sylwadau ar ddiffyg gweithredu gan Lywodraeth Cymru i ddatgelu TB mewn bywyd gwyllt, dywedodd Janet:

“Mae dros 10,000 o wartheg yn cael eu lladd i reoli TB bob blwyddyn yng Nghymru.

“Mae TB buchol yn cael effaith erchyll ar y sector amaethyddol yn genedlaethol ac yn lleol, ac mae polisi Llywodraeth Cymru yn arwain at boen meddwl difrifol. Mae gen i etholwyr sy’n wirioneddol ofn clywed canlyniadau profion TB eu buches.

“Ers y llynedd mae ffermwyr lleol wedi gorfod dilyn mesurau ychwanegol. Maen nhw’n cydweithredu, ond nid yw’r Gweinidog Materion Gwledig yn gwneud ei rhan hi.

“Mae’n warthus nad oes gan y Gweinidog raglen ar gyfer canfod TB mewn moch daear byw yn Nyffryn Conwy. Mae’n ymddangos bod hyn yn dystiolaeth bellach nad yw Llywodraeth Cymru yn barod i fynd i’r afael â’r clefyd ymysg bywyd gwyllt, a thrwy hynny, mae’n achosi pryder difrifol y bydd yr ymgyrch i ddileu TB yn mynd i fod yn anoddach fyth i’w chyflawni”.
