Overdue Action Needed to Address Grid Capacity Crisis / Hen bryd gweithredu i fynd i’r afael ag argyfwng capasiti’r grid

At a time when residents and businesses are under the stress of spiralling energy bills, and there is a need for radical short and long term support, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has renewed her calls for the Labour Government to unlock Wales’s green energy potential by fast tracking stakeholder discussions on increasing grid capacity and backing micro-grid trials.

The Shadow Minister has long campaigned for action on improving grid capacity in Wales, recognising that developers of green energy schemes of all sizes in Wales have faced and continue to face significant challenges in linking up to electricity power lines.

Commenting on the grid, the Shadow Minister said:

“If we are serious about achieving Net Zero 2050 decisive action is required to enable green energy projects of all sizes to link up to the grid.

“In August 2020 the Labour Government informed me in writing that officials had set up a grid network group, which consists of National Grid gas and electricity transmission owners, the System Operator, and the three electricity and gas distribution network operators in Wales. Two years on the Labour Government is stating that it is ‘working with energy experts to trigger grid investment’.

“For years we have been aware of the grid problem, but no tangible progress has been made.

“Positive green energy projects are being blocked at a time when we need more energy.

“As I have said before, improving capacity does not have to mean a plague of pylons, infrastructure can be put underground and we urgently need to consider rolling out micro grid trials across Wales”.

Electricity: Lack of capacity 'holds back green energy'

Wrth i drigolion a busnesau wynebu straen difrifol oherwydd y cynnydd enfawr mewn biliau ynni, mae angen cymorth radical arnynt yn y tymor byr a’r tymor hir. O ganlyniad, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid, wedi galw eto ar y Llywodraeth Lafur i ddatgloi potensial ynni gwyrdd Cymru trwy gyflymu trafodaethau â rhanddeiliaid ar gynyddu capasiti’r grid a chefnogi treialon microgrid.

Bu Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid yn ymgyrchu ers tro dros weithredu i wella capasiti’r grid yng Nghymru, gan gydnabod bod datblygwyr cynlluniau ynni gwyrdd o bob maint yng Nghymru wedi wynebu, ac yn parhau i wynebu, heriau sylweddol wrth gysylltu â llinellau pŵer trydan.

Wrth siarad am y grid, meddai Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid:

“Os ydym ni o ddifri am gyflawni Sero Net 2050, mae angen camau gweithredu pendant i sicrhau bod prosiectau ynni gwyrdd o bob maint yn gallu cysylltu â’r grid.

“Ym mis Awst 2020, cefais wybod yn ysgrifenedig gan y Llywodraeth Lafur fod swyddogion wedi sefydlu grŵp rhwydwaith y grid, sy’n cynnwys perchnogion trawsyrru nwy a thrydan y Grid Cenedlaethol, Gweithredwr y System, a’r tri gweithredwr rhwydwaith dosbarthu trydan a nwy yng Nghymru. Ddwy flynedd yn ddiweddarach, mae’r Llywodraeth Lafur yn parhau i ddatgan ei bod ‘yn gweithio gydag arbenigwyr ynni i sbarduno buddsoddiad yn y grid’.

“Rydym wedi bod yn ymwybodol o’r broblem gyda’r grid ers blynyddoedd, ond nid oes unrhyw gynnydd pendant wedi’i wneud.

“Mae prosiectau ynni gwyrdd cadarnhaol yn cael eu rhwystro ar adeg pan fo angen mwy o ynni arnom.

“Fel rwyf wedi’i ddweud o’r blaen, nid oes angen codi niferoedd di-ri o beilonau er mwyn gwella capasiti. Mae modd gosod y seilwaith o dan y ddaear, ac mae angen brys i ni ystyried cyflwyno treialon microgrid ledled Cymru.”
