Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has raised with the Welsh Government the need to take further steps in tackling rural crime.

Currently, the Welsh Government has the Wales Wildlife and Rural Crime Group which is supposed to prevent and investigate rural and wildlife crime. However, the Member has previously raised concerns that its membership excludes local government and farming stakeholders.

Sighting latest data, Janet said.

“Over recent weeks I have heard of serious incidents across Wales, such as:

  • 150 white faced Welsh breeding ewes being stolen
  • 1,000 litres of diesel taken from a farm
  • A quad bike stolen
  • And 7 livestock worrying events in North Wales, including a prized ram and Llandudno goat viciously attacked by dogs.

These are concerning figures and show the demanding role our police in rural areas face”.

Commenting further, Janet said.

“I strongly believe that that Welsh Government could play a stronger role in tackling rural crime. Good rural policing is about far more than numbers of police officers on the ground – we must look to form the most effective partnerships

“I strongly advise that the Welsh Government liaise with the Minister for Rural Affairs and law officers in the UK Government about the potential for creating a greater Welsh response to rural crime through the establishment of a National Rural Crime Taskforce for Wales.”

Cymraeg;

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy, wedi sôn am yr angen wrth Llywodraeth Cymru i gymryd camau pellach i fynd i'r afael â throseddau cefn gwlad.

Ar hyn o bryd, mae gan Lywodraeth Cymru Grŵp Troseddau Cefn Gwlad a Bywyd Gwyllt Cymru sydd i fod i atal ac ymchwilio i droseddau cefn gwlad a bywyd gwyllt. Fodd bynnag, mae'r Aelod wedi codi pryderon o'r blaen nad yw aelodaeth y grŵp yn cynnwys rhanddeiliaid llywodraeth leol a ffermio.

Wrth weld y data diweddaraf, dywedodd Janet:

“Dros yr wythnosau diwethaf, rydw i wedi clywed am ddigwyddiadau difrifol ledled Cymru, megis:

  • 150 o famogiaid magu penwyn Cymreig yn cael eu dwyn
  • 1,000 litr o ddiesel wedi'i ddwyn o fferm
  • Beic cwad wedi'i ddwyn
  • A 7 digwyddiad o boeni da byw yn y Gogledd, gan gynnwys hwrdd a gafr yn Llandudno yn dioddef ymosodiadau milain gan gŵn.

Mae'r ffigurau hyn yn destun pryder ac yn dangos y rôl anodd sydd gan ein heddlu mewn ardaloedd gwledig”.

Ychwanegodd Janet:

“Rwy'n credu'n gryf y gallai Llywodraeth Cymru wneud mwy at fynd i'r afael â throseddau cefn gwlad. Mae plismona cefn gwlad da yn golygu llawer mwy na nifer y swyddogion heddlu ar lawr gwlad – rhaid i ni geisio ffurfio'r partneriaethau mwyaf effeithiol.

“Rwy'n cynghori'n gryf y dylai Llywodraeth Cymru gysylltu â'r Gweinidog Materion Gwledig a swyddogion y gyfraith yn Llywodraeth y DU ynghylch y posibilrwydd o greu ymateb Cymreig cryfach i droseddau cefn gwlad drwy sefydlu Tasglu Troseddau Cefn Gwlad Cenedlaethol i Gymru.”
