Having made repeated calls for UK supermarkets to ban the sale of disposable barbeques, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, has now welcomed the news that Morrisons will ban the sale of these items in stores located within 1 mile of national parks.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“While I am keen to see UK Supermarkets commit to banning the sale of these items, as Aldi and Waitrose have done, I do welcome this positive step taken by Morrisons to limit the sale of disposable barbecues.

“It is reported that over 3,000 disposable barbeques were sold by Morrisons stores located within 1 mile of national parks during the summer of 2021. This shocking statistic highlights the scale of the situation.

“Action taken by Morrisons will reduce the potential threat these items present to our pristine national parks and surrounding environment. Additionally, I hope that this will help to highlight that safer alternatives exist, such as portable barbeques.

“I would take this opportunity to thank Morrisons for taking this positive step towards change. I would also encourage other UK Supermarkets and retailers to follow the example set by Aldi and Waitrose and consider banning the sale of these items.”

Ar ôl galw dro ar ôl tro am waharddiad gan archfarchnadoedd y DU ar werthu barbeciws untro, mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi croesawu’r newyddion y bydd Morrisons yn gwahardd gwerthiant yr eitemau hyn mewn siopau sydd wedi’u lleoli o fewn milltir i barciau cenedlaethol.

Gan roi sylwadau ar y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:

“Er fy mod yn awyddus i weld archfarchnadoedd y DU yn ymrwymo i wahardd gwerthiant yr eitemau hyn, fel y mae Aldi a Waitrose wedi’i wneud, rwy’n croesawu’r cam cadarnhaol hwn y mae Morrisons wedi’i gymryd i gyfyngu ar werthiant barbeciws untro.

“Dywedir bod dros 3,000 o setiau barbeciw untro wedi’u gwerthu yn ystod haf 2021 gan siopau Morrisons sydd wedi’u lleoli o fewn milltir i barciau cenedlaethol. Mae’r ystadegyn syfrdanol hwn yn pwysleisio maint y broblem.

“Bydd y camau y mae Morrisons wedi’u cymryd yn lleihau bygythiad posibl yr eitemau hyn yn ein parciau cenedlaethol hyfryd a’r amgylchedd cyfagos. Yn ogystal, rwy’n gobeithio y bydd y camau hyn yn help i bwysleisio’r ffaith bod modd defnyddio mathau gwahanol o farbeciw, fel barbeciws cludadwy.

“Hoffwn fanteisio ar y cyfle hwn i ddiolch i Morrisons am gymryd y cam cadarnhaol hwn ymlaen tuag at newid. Byddwn hefyd yn annog Archfarchnadoedd a manwerthwyr eraill yn y DU i ddilyn esiampl Aldi a Waitrose ac ystyried gwahardd gwerthu’r eitemau hyn.”
