Shadow Minister for Climate Change Opposes Council Tax Hike

Janet Finch-Saunders

The Shadow Minister for Climate Change has had a long-standing commitment to oppose new increases in council tax and in her contribution to yesterday’s Senedd debate, she raised deep concerns over the Welsh Governments poor track record on building new homes.

The Shadow Minister said:

“Failure by successive Welsh Labour Governments to provide new homes with only 4,616 new dwellings completed in 2020/21 when 12,000 had been scheduled, is simply not good enough when we’re witnessing over 7,000 people being pushed into homelessness and temporary accommodation here in Wales.”

The Shadow Ministers contributions were in light of the Senedd debate on the Council Tax (Long-term Empty Dwellings and Dwellings Occupied Periodically) (Wales) Regulations 2022. These figures have highlighted the crisis created by Welsh Labour and their inability to meet the demand for housing in Wales.

Janet added further:

“Failure to get empty homes back into use will lead to an existential crisis if Welsh Labour continue to sit on their hands. There were 25,725 in 2017/18 and 22,140 in 2022/23. To the Welsh electorate, to my constituents, this isn’t good enough. To further increase council by 300% is a further insult when the cost of living is steadily increasing by the day.”
