Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, is encouraging locals and tourists to visit the Great Orme Bronze Age Mines in Llandudno.  Her call comes following a visit to see the archaeological discoveries which have changed our history, and ahead of the attraction reopening tomorrow, Saturday 19 March 2022.

During her visit, Janet met with Nick Jowitt and Tony Hammond, who have played a key role in uncovering our hidden history and sharing the wealth of discoveries with the world.

Uncovered in 1987 during a scheme to landscape an area of the Great Orme, the copper mines discovered  represent one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of recent times. Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age they change our views about the ancient people of Britain and their civilized and structured society 2,000 years before the Roman invasion.

The Shadow Minister for Climate Change who is actively campaigning to see all of us become more aware of our environment, commented after the visit:

“People from all over the world head to Llandudno to enjoy our magnificent destination.  4,000 years ago, copper and axes were being exported from Llandudno to places as far away as the Netherlands, Sweden, and Poland!

“Our town’s famous headland provided almost 98% of the metal in Britain, and was home to the largest prehistoric copper mines in the world.

“It is incredible that metal from Aberconwy armed the armies of the ancients, and that the constituency and therefore North Wales had a key role in connecting peoples across our continent thousands of years ago.

“The team at the Bronze Age Mines should be extremely proud of the incredible contribution they have made to the story of Wales, Britain, and Europe. Everyone should make an effort to visit”.
