Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has spoken out in the Welsh Parliament about the urgent need for the Welsh Government to reward and encourage Welsh farmers to continue producing food, and take us a step closer to being self-sufficient.

The Member’s calls for Wales to boost food production and become less dependent on imports from outside of Wales for our meat, dairy, fruit, veg, and grain come at a time when:

  • Wheat prices hit record highs as war halts exports from Ukraine and Russia
  • Welsh farmers have been found to be among the world's most sustainable, with research emphasising that Welsh agriculture has among the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of comparable systems worldwide
  • Horticulture in Wales has been in long term decline with the number of hectares halved in 40 years

Commenting on her long running campaign to back active farmers and food production in Wales, Janet said:

“There are fewer than 3,000 hectares now under cultivation for potatoes, field vegetables, small fruit and commercial orchards in Wales.

“80% of wheat used in the UK is grown domestically. However, we should now be working towards increasing that percentage further.

“Whilst I have consistently argued in the Welsh Parliament for years that we need to boost productivity and be less reliant on imports, the Welsh Government is following an agenda which could see around 3,750 Welsh family farms lost to tree plantations.

“The war is highlighting once again the need for us to produce more food here in Wales, so it is time to properly back Welsh farmers to continue producing food”.

Written Question to the Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd:

  • Given the impact of the war in Ukraine on grain, will the Minister state what action she is taking to support Welsh arable farmers plough any land set aside?

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd, wedi siarad yn Senedd Cymru am yr angen dybryd i Lywodraeth Cymru wobrwyo ac annog ffermwyr Cymru i barhau i gynhyrchu bwyd, a mynd â ni gam yn nes at fod yn hunangynhaliol.

Mae'r Aelod yn galw ar Gymru i hybu cynhyrchu bwyd a bod yn llai dibynnol ar fewnforion o'r tu allan i Gymru ar gyfer ein cig, llaeth, ffrwythau, llysiau a grawn ar adeg pan fo:

  • Prisiau gwenith ar eu lefel uchaf erioed wrth i ryfel atal allforion o Wcráin a Rwsia
  • Mae ffermwyr Cymru ymhlith y rhai mwyaf cynaliadwy yn y byd, gydag ymchwil yn pwysleisio bod amaethyddiaeth Cymru â’r lefelau allyriadau nwyon tŷ gwydr isaf o systemau tebyg ledled y byd
  • Mae garddwriaeth yng Nghymru yng nghanol dirywiad hirdymor, gyda nifer yr hectarau wedi'u haneru mewn 40 mlynedd

Wrth sôn am ei hymgyrch hir i gefnogi ffermwyr gweithgar a chynhyrchu bwyd yng Nghymru, dywedodd Janet:

“Mae llai na 3,000 hectar bellach yn cael eu hamaethu ar gyfer tatws, llysiau'r maes, ffrwythau bach a pherllannau masnachol yng Nghymru.

“Mae 80% o'r gwenith a ddefnyddir yn y DU yn cael ei dyfu'n ddomestig. Fodd bynnag, dylem fod yn anelu at gynyddu'r ganran honno ymhellach erbyn hyn.

“Er fy mod i wedi dadlau'n gyson yn Senedd Cymru ers blynyddoedd bod angen i ni hybu cynhyrchiant a bod yn llai dibynnol ar fewnforion, mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn dilyn agenda a allai olygu ein bod yn colli tua 3,750 o ffermydd teuluol o Gymru i blanhigfeydd coed.

“Mae'r rhyfel unwaith eto'n pwysleisio'r angen inni gynhyrchu mwy o fwyd yma yng Nghymru, felly mae'n hen bryd inni gefnogi ffermwyr Cymru i barhau i gynhyrchu bwyd."

DIWEDD

Cwestiwn Ysgrifenedig i'r Gweinidog Materion Gwledig a Gogledd Cymru, a'r Trefnydd:

  • O ystyried effaith rhyfel Wcráin ar rawn, a wnaiff y Gweinidog ddatgan pa gamau y mae'n eu cymryd i gefnogi ffermwyr âr Cymru i aredig unrhyw dir sydd wedi'i neilltuo?
