Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has spoken of her delight that Aldi has become the first UK supermarket to ban the sale of disposable barbecues nationwide, in a bid to protect the nation’s forests and wildlife.

The move follows the campaign by the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy which saw her write to 13 retailers last year calling for a review of stock decisions to bring an end to the purchase of disposable BBQs. Aldi responded positively stating that they had no further plans to sell disposable BBQs again in 2021 and were reviewing their plans for 2022.

Commenting after Aldi’s decision to stop the sale of disposable BBQs across the UK, Janet said:

“I applaud Aldi for taking my concerns seriously and becoming the first UK supermarket to ban the sale of disposable barbecues nationwide.

“It would be fantastic to see other supermarkets follow suit because disposable BBQs are known to have set alight a number of bins, been left under sand on beaches, and charred land.

“Aldi’s decision will lead to the removal of approximately 35 tonnes of single-use waste packaging. Imagine how much greater that figure would be if all supermarkets got on board too!”

Responses from Aldi & Coop spark progress for disposable BBQ campaign

Letters seek to spark “civic-minded” leadership in ending sale of disposable BBQs

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd, wedi sôn am ei llawenydd mai Aldi yw'r archfarchnad gyntaf yn y DU i wahardd gwerthu barbeciw tafladwy ledled y wlad, mewn ymgais i ddiogelu coedwigoedd a bywyd gwyllt.

Mae'r cam hwn yn dilyn yr ymgyrch gan yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Aberconwy pan ysgrifennodd at 13 o fanwerthwyr y llynedd yn galw am adolygiad o benderfyniadau stocio i roi terfyn ar brynu barbeciws tafladwy. Ymatebodd Aldi yn gadarnhaol gan ddweud nad oedd ganddyn nhw unrhyw gynlluniau pellach i werthu barbeciws tafladwy eto yn 2021 a'u bod yn adolygu eu cynlluniau ar gyfer 2022.

Wrth sôn am benderfyniad Aldi i roi'r gorau i werthu barbeciws tafladwy ledled y DU, dywedodd Janet:

“Rwy'n cymeradwyo Aldi am gymryd fy mhryderon o ddifrif gan ddod yr archfarchnad gyntaf yn y DU i wahardd gwerthu barbeciws tafladwy ledled y wlad.

“Byddai'n wych gweld archfarchnadoedd eraill yn dilyn eu hesiampl, oherwydd gwyddom am farbeciws tafladwy sydd wedi rhoi biniau ar dân, wedi'u gadael o dan dywod ar draethau, ac yn llosgi'r tir.

“Bydd penderfyniad Aldi yn arwain at gael gwared ar tua 35 tunnell o ddeunydd pacio gwastraff untro. Dychmygwch faint yn fwy fyddai'r ffigur hwnnw pe bai pob archfarchnad yn ymuno hefyd!”
