Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, and Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has spoken of her delight at the announcement that the UK Government has asked regulators to begin assessing Rolls-Royce’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plant design.

The Rolls-Royce SMR’s nuclear power plant design is entering the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process with its regulators – the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales.

The 470MW SMR draws upon well-established Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) technology in use all over the world, but Rolls-Royce SMR’s unique approach will see the reactor components built in factory conditions and assembled on site.

Commenting on this significant step in bringing SMRs into existence, Janet said:

“I am proud that the UK Government has backed Rolls' plan with an initial £210million to develop their design.

“We need to see further progress in achieving net zero and producing low carbon and low cost energy. Entering the GDA assessment process is another step in that direction as we are now closer to deploying a fleet of SMRs.

“This is brilliant news especially for us in North Wales, because SMR creation at Trawsfynydd and Wylfa would create an economic boost and highly skilled jobs”.

Rolls-Royce SMR entering regulatory assessment process

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, AS Aberconwy, a Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd, wrth ei bodd gyda'r cyhoeddiad bod Llywodraeth y DU wedi gofyn i reoleiddwyr ddechrau asesu cynlluniau ar gyfer pwerdy adweithydd modiwlar bach (SMR) Rolls-Royce.

Mae cynllun pwerdy niwclear SMR Rolls-Royce yn mynd trwy broses Asesiad Dyluniad Generig (GDA) gyda'i reoleiddwyr – y Swyddfa Rheoleiddio Niwclear, Asiantaeth yr Amgylchedd a Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru.

Mae'r adweithydd modiwlaidd bach 470MW yn defnyddio technoleg adweithydd dŵr dan wasgedd (PWR) sydd wedi'i hen sefydlu a ddefnyddir ledled y byd, ond bydd dull unigryw SMR Rolls-Royce yn gweld cydrannau'r adweithydd yn cael eu hadeiladu mewn ffatri a'u cydosod ar y safle.

Wrth sôn am y cam sylweddol hwn i wireddu SMR, meddai Janet:

“Rwy'n falch bod Llywodraeth y DU wedi cefnogi cynllun Rolls gyda swm cychwynnol o £210 miliwn i ddatblygu'r dyluniad.

“Mae angen i ni weld cynnydd pellach o ran sicrhau dyfodol sero net a chynhyrchu ynni carbon isel a chost isel. Mae dechrau proses asesu'r GDA yn gam arall i'r cyfeiriad hwnnw gan ein bod bellach yn agosach at ddefnyddio fflyd o adweithyddion modiwlar bach.

“Mae hyn yn newyddion gwych yn enwedig i ni yma yn y Gogledd, oherwydd byddai creu SMR yn Nhrawsfynydd a'r Wylfa yn creu hwb economaidd a swyddi hyfedr iawn."
