First Minister urged to review criteria of Covid-19 funding support

In a most timely question to the First Minister, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has urged the devolved Government to review the business funding support eligibility rules for self-catering accommodation owners, as well as consider increasing the funding available to help save jobs.

Commenting after her question, Janet said:

“Having actively engaged with local businesses throughout the most recent period of restrictions, I know that one of my constituents with a hospitality business has witnessed a £60,000 loss as a direct result of the compounded assault of restrictions and cancellations.

“Last week, that business had to lay off eight members of staff. The evidence from Aberconwy proves that the Welsh Government’s grant support is too little and too late. In fact, digging into the eligibility criteria further, we know that numerous local businesses are being excluded.

“Many self-catering accommodation owners have contacted my office in despair as they cannot access financial support, despite having lost bookings worth thousands. It is wholly unfair that the Welsh Government have created a ridiculous rule that self-catering properties have to be for 30 people or more.

“This is why I have questioned the First Minister today, urging his administration to act on the avoidable issues raised by changing the eligibility rules for self-catering accommodation owners, as well as consider increasing the funding available to help save the sector and jobs.”
