Campaign Success: Aberconwy MS Welcomes Expanded Role of Llandudno Hospital

Llandudno

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has spoken of her delight that Llandudno Hospital has adopted a winter initiative to help ease bed pressures at other sites.

This positive development follows a chain of actions by the Member for Aberconwy who has been working to see services maintained and restored at Llandudno Hospital. Her actions include:

  • Leading calls to re-open the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) after she discovered that no patients have been seen there in 2021;
  • Writing to the Chair of Health and Social Care Committee, Welsh Parliament, asking that the Committee consider the possibility that the serious problems caused by delayed hospital discharge at the three district general hospitals in North Wales be at least partially alleviated through having a policy in place which requires those patients who are medically fit for discharge to be transferred to the hospitals such as Llandudno;
  • Requesting a meeting of the Llandudno Hospital Action Group;
  • Writing an article in the North Wales Weekly News this week highlighting that our smaller hospitals could be better used.

Commenting on the Health Board’s announcement, Janet said:

“I am delighted that common sense has prevailed, and that the Health Board has finally listened to my calls to reverse the trend of centralising services in the three district general hospitals by creating a transition ward here in Llandudno.

“As I made clear to the Senedd this week, our smaller hospitals can and must play an even more important role in our health service.

“With Llandudno MIU already performing excellently, it is clear that the hospital has great potential.

“Going forward, I urge the Health Board to review whether such transition wards can be created at Abergele, Colwyn Bay, Denbigh, Royal Alexandra, Ruthin, Deeside, Chirk, Holywell, Mold, Pwllheli, Dolgellau, Stanley, Alltwen, Llangefni, Caernarfon, and Tywyn, and for the MIU opening times at Llandudno to be urgently changed so that the Unit is open 24/7”.
