Calls for storm resilience collaboration following Storm Arwen damage

Over the weekend, Storm Arwen wreaked havoc across Wales as 30,000 homes were left without power, Transport for Wales suspended the majority of its rail services and an animal rescue building was badly damaged.

In a request for a statement to the Welsh Government today, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and the Shadow Minister for Climate Change – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has called for an explanation of what collaboration is taking place with local authorities to ensure that essential preparations are taking place to make communities storm resilient.

Underlining the need for a statement, Janet said:

“In Llandudno, sadly Storm Arwen destroyed a church window and felled countless trees. In North Wales more broadly, we also know that ITV had to cancel weekend episodes of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! with their shoot taking place at the historic Gwrych Castle.

“With a wind speed of 81 mph being recorded at Aberporth, it was another stark reminder of the power of mother nature. I should like to pay tribute to our local authorities and those officers who responded so diligently to call outs in light of the damage caused.

“This is why I have called on the Minister for Climate Change to make a statement on the measures that the Welsh Government will take to ensure that we have more storm resilient communities.”
