The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has praised work being undertaken by Cartrefi Conwy to redevelop Glanrafon in Llanrwst, including proposals for a new modular homes design which aims to improve heat efficiency and combat climate change.
Mrs Finch-Saunders toured the site with the group’s Chief Executive, Andrew Bowden. Also present were Daniel Hall (Assistant Director of Neighbourhoods), Bill Hunt (Board Member), Matthew Stowe (Environmental Development Officer), Owain Roberts (Assistant Director of Assets and Tenant Safety), and David Kelsall (Assistant Director of Development & Growth).
The scheme includes the construction of fourteen new homes, all a mix of 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom properties, which it is hoped will help to bolster the housing stock locally. The work will also upgrade and improve the existing children’s play space which is at the heart of the site.
Commenting on her visit, Janet said:
"It was fantastic to visit the Glanrafon site in Llanrwst to hear about the ambitious, green and future-proof plans that Cartrefi Conwy has for this redevelopment. Not only does it respond to the risks posed by Climate Change, it also looks to unite the community through bold new community play spaces.
"Adding to the local housing stock, I’m told that the new homes will be built using a ground-breaking modular construction method which is intended to be incredibly energy efficient, requiring only a single radiator to heat the entire property. This is exactly the type of home building innovation that will make a marked difference to our well-being.
"The recent CCRA3 report found that the regulation of temperature in our homes will be paramount if we are to safeguard public health. By placing the onus on insulation and temperature flow, the work being undertaken across this site will help to save money and the planet.
"In my role as the Shadow Minister for Climate Change, I had written to Andrew to examine how our Registered Social Landlords are realising the challenges of our changing climate. In visiting the site, it was great to see commitments made turn into feasible action."
A spokesperson for Cartrefi Conwy said:
"The Glanrafon development in Llanrwst is part of a wider regeneration programme in the area. We are building 14 family homes that are built to Passivhaus standard which means massive energy savings for our tenants. The timber frames for these homes were built in our very own Creating Enterprise Modular Solutions factory that creates new employment opportunities for our tenants.
"None of this would have been possible without support from the Welsh Government’s Innovative Housing Programme funding. We are really looking forward to welcoming families into these beautiful homes in the new year."
