Following the Member’s long-running campaign, petitioning the Welsh Government to undertake a feasibility study into having an alternative signal controlled solution on the A470 for Pont Fawr in Llanrwst, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has welcomed a commitment from the Deputy Minister for Climate Change that the matter will be highlighted during the WelTAG stage 1 workshop.
The community has experienced traffic issues on the 17th Century Pont Fawr bridge in Llanrwst for years. The renewed commitment follows a letter from the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy. Janet also submitted a Written Question regarding the concern. The discussions referenced will take place in early 2022/23.
Commenting on the reply, Janet said:
“The traffic troubles of the main road over the Afon Conwy in Llanrwst is well documented. At times, the bridge’s historic walls have been hit, standoffs are a regular occurrence on the apex, and road users put their safety at risk when vehicles attempt to reverse in both directions.
“For such an important road to manoeuvre over a single track bridge is never going to be ideal and intervention must be taken before a serious injury occurs. This is why it is crucial that we clinched a commitment from the Welsh Government to ensure that the situation will be highlighted during the WelTAG stage 1 workshop.
“Having raised concerns about the junction with Pont Fawr; the junction in Tal y Cafn; Bodnant hill; and the section in the Rhyd y Creuau area, I am clear that there is a need for action at numerous points.
“When the Senedd resumes its Plenary work after the summer recess, and in questions to the Deputy Minister going forward, I will look to ensure that this issue remains at the top of the list for the WelTAG stage 1 discussions. We must see this commitment through if change is going to be achieved.”
