The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has undertaken a socially distanced site visit to Queen’s Road in Craig-y-Don, to discuss what traffic calming measures can be introduced to further protect pedestrian safety. Councillors, residents, and Council officers were also in attendance.

Many residents hold long-standing concerns over speeding along Queen’s Road. Mrs Finch-Saunders says that any proposed changes to improve road safety should "reflect the increasing use of Craig-y-Don Park, following a successful and long-standing campaign to invest in playground equipment."

Commenting on the meeting, Janet said:

“Following a successful campaign to increase investment in the Craig-y-Don play area, the local traffic issue presents a real risk to the safety of young children. The speed of vehicles using Queen’s Road has been a key area of concern for many years, with residents informing me that they are plainly terrified to cross this road.

“Queen’s Road is one of the main routes to our world-famous promenade and brilliant local businesses. Given the strategic importance of the highway, that runs through the very heart of our community, I am not surprised that residents are concerned about pedestrian safety.

“This socially distanced site visit, alongside local Councillors and Council officials, was an important and positive first step towards realising what changes are necessary in the longer term. But a recent accident on the highway has concentrated minds to ensure that more immediate and visible steps are taken, too.

“I have long been of the mind that any proposed investment to Queen’s Road must reflect the increased usage of the excellent local park, which has been so selflessly cared for by the Friends of Queen’s Park. Members of this group, such as Wing Commander Jeff Wright MBE, have worked tirelessly to maintain this welcoming green space.

“I’d like to sincerely thank this brilliant local action group for their support in pushing for these local road improvements, along with the schoolchildren who have contributed to a marvellous new stone centrepiece which kindly thanks our wonderful NHS staff for their actions throughout the pandemic.”
