The Welsh Conservatives’ Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (05 October) welcomed the start of the Campaign for Wool’s 10th annual Wool Week, marking the moment by writing out to a variety of bedding manufacturers and vendors to urge for their support.

The Campaign for Wool is a collaborative global community united by their patron His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. It aims to educate as many people as possible about the benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings and everyday life.

Last month, Mrs Finch-Saunders launched her Welsh Wool Pledge which urged the Welsh Government to consider making the use of Welsh Wool mandatory when furnishing public buildings.

Welcoming the launch of Wool Week 2020, Janet said:

“The Campaign for Wool’s Wool Week has been a monumental effort in growing awareness and understanding of this phenomenal natural material. Since October 2010, it has celebrated and promoted an environmentally responsible, sustainable, and commercially viable wool industry.

“When you examine the virtues of Welsh wool, its properties are perfect for bedding and duvets. The natural fibres are crimped, and when tightly packed together, form millions of tiny pockets of air. This unique structure allows it to absorb and release moisture without compromising its thermal efficiency.

“It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. At the end of its useful life, this fibre can also be returned to the soil where it can decompose, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. It takes only a very short time to break down when compared to most synthetics.

“That is why I have begun this Wool Week by writing to a variety of leading bedding manufacturers and vendors to ask that they actively promote Welsh Wool as a sustainable bedding product. With their support, Welsh wool can play an instrumental role in the sustainable bedding industry.”
