The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (24 August) called for an explicit commitment from the Welsh Government that they will review the two funding structures for children and adult palliative care facilities to safeguard their long-term prospects.
Traditional fundraising avenues for our nation’s hospices have been devastated by the present COVID-19 pandemic, despite a heroic effort from generous and innovative fundraisers.
Commenting on the funding situation, Janet said:
“We are so incredibly fortunate to have exceptional palliative care facilities in Aberconwy, with Tŷ Gobaith and St David’s Hospice committed to providing invaluable care and support to individuals with life-limiting conditions, as well as their friends and family.
“Without the efforts of a local army of fundraisers, these charities would not be able continue to support so many individuals. However, there is a concern that our hospices will only see a fraction of the fundraising support received in former years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The onus must now fall upon the Welsh Government to increase funding support so that this care may continue in the long-term. Improvements must be urgently made to the outdated funding formula so that our hospices can continue their vital work without financial concerns looming over their future.
“The present recovery period offers an unrivalled opportunity to build back a compassionate country. I urge for a bold symbol of change from the Welsh Government that will work to encourage, support and facilitate the caring actions of others.”
