Meeting called to discuss solutions to Queen’s Road speeding concerns

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (21 August) written to Conwy County Borough Council to request a Covid-compliant site meeting at Queen’s Road in Craig-y-Don, to discuss what traffic calming measures can be introduced to further protect pedestrian safety.

Many residents in the area hold long-standing concerns over speeding, with Mrs Finch-Saunders saying that any proposed changes to improve road safety should "reflect the increasing use of Craig-y-Don Park, following a successful campaign to invest in playground equipment." Earlier this week, a young boy was knocked off his bike following a collision with a passing vehicle.

Speaking of local concern about speeding in the area, Janet said:

“ Following a successful campaign to increase investment in the Craig-y-Don play area, the ongoing traffic issue presents a real risk to the safety of young local children. The speed of vehicles using Queen’s Road has been a key area of concern for many years, with residents now telling me that they are plainly terrified to cross this road.

“As all UK Governments ask the public to inject more exercise into their daily routine to maintain good public health in the aftermath of COVID-19, we cannot let current issues of speeding along Queen’s Road stand as a physical barrier to some of society’s most vulnerable accessing the green open space of Craig-y-Don Park.

“This is why I have written to officials at Conwy County Borough Council to request a Covid-safe site visit so that we may discuss what appropriate action would best suit the area; whether it be the construction of a traffic island, zebra crossing or further speed limit signage. Investment here must reflect the increased usage of this excellent local park.

“Having recently secured a commitment from the Welsh Government to erect signs ahead of the new Glan Conwy zebra crossing, to ensure that road users are warned of the alteration in good time, I am commited to finding sensible solutions that benefit both road users and pedestrians.”
