Janet by the Llanrwst sign

The campaign led by Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy, to save Llanrwst bridge from further damage and traffic trouble has taken a major step forward with Conwy County Borough Council proposing new road markings and signage.  However, so that residents can consider all potential options for the bridge, the Member has written to challenge the Welsh Government for blocking consideration of a new traffic control system.

Commenting on the situation, Janet said:

“The chaos that has been unfolding on the main road over the Conwy in Llanrwst is well known.

“The historic walls have been wacked on numerous occasions, Mexican standoffs are a regular occurrence on the apex, and pedestrians and drivers put their safety at risk when vehicles attempt to revers in both directions, and especially into the A470.

“As I have said before, for such an important road to have a single track bridge is never going to be ideal. However, my work to see the situation better managed is paying off.

“Conwy County Borough Council has developed proposals for new signage and road markings, but the Welsh Government is flashing red at any request for consideration of introducing a signal controlled solution on the A470.

“So that residents can consider all potential options, I have written to the Minister for Economy and Transport to challenge the road block he has caused.

“It seems that the Minister could learn much from the proactive approach of the highways department at Conwy County Borough Council”.

AC yn sicrhau cynnydd yn achos Pont Fawr

Mae’r ymgyrch dan arweiniad Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod Cynulliad Aberconwy, i achub pont Llanrwst rhag difrod pellach a phroblemau traffig wedi cymryd cam mawr ymlaen wrth i Gyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy ddatgan ei fwriad i osod arwyddion a marciau ffordd newydd. Fodd bynnag, er mwyn i drigolion allu ystyried yr holl opsiynau posibl ar gyfer y bont, mae’r Gweinidog wedi ysgrifennu i herio Llywodraeth Cymru am rwystro ystyriaeth o system reoli traffig newydd.

Wrth sôn am y sefyllfa, meddai Jane:

“Mae pawb yn gwybod am y drafferth mae’r bont dros afon Conwy yn ei achosi yn Llanrwst.

“Mae’r waliau hanesyddol wedi’u taro sawl gwaith, mae achosion o wrthdaro di-ildio yn ddigwyddiadau rheolaidd, ac mae cerddwyr a gyrwyr yn peryglu eu diogelwch wrth geisio bacio i bob cyfeiriad, yn enwedig i’r A470.

“Fel y dywedais o’r blaen, nid yw cael pont gul ar ffordd  bwysig byth yn mynd i fod yn ddelfrydol. Ond mae fy ngwaith i sicrhau bod y sefyllfa’n cael ei rheoli’n well yn talu ar ei ganfed.

“Mae Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy wedi datblygu cynigion ar gyfer arwyddion a marciau ffordd newydd, ond mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn atal unrhyw gais sy’n ystyried cyflwyno goleuadau traffig ar yr A470.

“Er mwyn i’r trigolion allu ystyried yr holl opsiynau posibl rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Weinidog yr Economi a Thrafnidiaeth i herio’r rhwystr ar y ffordd mae ef wedi’i achosi.

“Mae’n ymddangos y gallai’r Gweinidog ddysgu llawer o ddull rhagweithiol adran priffyrdd Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy”.
