Two Conwy (county) museums are celebrating this week, having secured over £1.1million from the National Lottery to redevelop their facilities and make them better places to visit.

Llandudno Museum and Penmaenmawr Museum will use the funding raised through National Lottery ticket sales to strengthen their current displays as well as developing new activities for visitors to see and do.

The money will mean more objects can go on display and the museums can welcome a wider range of people through sensory displays, sign language and walking tours.

Widening access and doubling displays at Llandudno Museum

Llandudno Museum has been awarded £862,200 by the National Lottery.

Telling the story of the nationally significant seaside town, this four year project will enhance the all-weather attraction by creating a temporary exhibition gallery for new and revolving exhibitions, as well as improved facilities such as a dedicated new family-friendly space for learning and community use, self-service coffee area and larger shop selling locally sourced products.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy, said:

“The announcement is great news for Aberconwy – both for local people and the many visitors and tourists who come to the area also. Celebrating and preserving our local history and folklore is essential to ensuring that it will be appreciated and enjoyed by generations to come. I look forward to paying Llandudno Museum and Penmaenmawr Museum a visit again soon to see how they’re getting on with their exciting projects.”

Experience history up close and personal at Penmaenmawr Museum

Penmaenmawr Museum has been awarded £248,600 by the National Lottery.

As well as a Post Office themed tearoom and new shop, the museum’s galleries will have a complete re-fit with both permanent displays and temporary collections.

The three year project will include interactive, bilingual and sign languaged exhibitions as well as Welsh language taster sessions. A new walking tour will mean visitors can experience Penmaenmawr’s history up close and personal like never before – taking the museum out to the streets.

Guto Bebb, Member of Parliament for Aberconwy, said:

“I’m delighted that these two wonderful museums have received such a significant funding boost. I know how hard-working and passionate their Trustees and volunteers are and this is a terrific reward for all their efforts to date. We are proud of our heritage and culture and these museums are at the heart of sharing their community history, with visitors and locals alike. I shall enjoy watching their exciting projects come to fruition.”
