Marks and Spencer urged to update community on Llandudno relocation plans

The retailer announced last November it wanted to move to the town's retail park.

Marks and Spencer has been urged to clarify its proposals to relocate the Llandudno store to a retail park after a delay submitting plans.

The retailer made the shock announcement last November that it was to close its satellite store on Mostyn Street and consolidate in the main store - then shift all departments to a unit on Parc Llandudno.

Bosses did not reveal where they were due to go on the retail park but said a planning application would be submitted "early next year".

But it is now seven months into 2018 and M&S is still not giving further details - leaving the community in the dark and lots of speculation on Marks' final destination.

There are hopes the chain will remain in the town centre - but M&S said it remained committed to the move.

Aberconwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders said: "So many people are unsure as to exactly what is happening.

"It would be great if the plans could be made clearer so that the community is aware and to enable other high quality businesses perhaps considering moving into this property to make an informed decision.

"The loss of M&S could see a considerable change to our high street, so it is important that priority is given to ensuring this property is taken on by a suitable alternative business."

Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller still hopes the retailer can be kept in the town centre.

He said: "Given how vocal they have been in promoting Healthy High Streets then taking steps that would be detrimental to Mostyn Street seems to contradict that ethos.

"Our preference is for them to remain on the high street and I struggle to believe the current store in this format is not contributing to profits at M&S."

A spokeswoman for M&S said: “We remain committed to relocating to Parc Llandudno and offering a bigger and better store for the area. We’re currently at the planning stage.

"That process is ongoing and we’ll share our plans with the community as soon as we can.”
