“Disappointment” as Welsh Government Tourist Strategy sees huge fall in tourism numbers

The number of overnight visits by GB residents choosing to holiday in Wales has fallen by almost one and a half million from 2016 to 2017, and Aberconwy Assembly Member, Janet Finch-Saunders, is questioning when exactly the Welsh Government will relinquish its control of Visit Wales so to allow a long term industry-led approach to the visitor economy.

Janet said:

“Here in the constituency I am honoured to represent tourism is one of the main industries, therefore, I am extremely disappointed to find that Wales as a whole saw a 1.44 million reduction in the number of overnight visits by GB residents choosing to holiday here in 2017.

“Given that hoteliers and businesses involved in the industry are trying their upmost to ensure that people have a fantastic experience in Wales, I am certain that much of the blame for this disappointing fall lies with the weak support offered to the sector by the Welsh Government.

“As you might already be aware, I have spoken out on the failure of the Welsh Government to relinquish control of Visit Wales so to allow an industry-led approach to marketing this fantastic destination on a number of occasions.  Whilst it seems that its ineffective, sporadic, yearly promotional themes will persists for now, I can assure you that I will continue to stand up for this vital part of our economy by fighting for a long term strategy to be implemented by those who will be effected by it”.
