Given that rural communities are the backbone of our economy, and that farmers care for more than 80% of the land area in Wales, Janet Finch-Saunders AM is pleased to have met with representatives of Eryri Young Farmers, and to be working to help young farmers’ future in Wales.

Janet said:

“From visiting farms, working with farmers and organisations such as Farmers Union of Wales, I am fully aware of the significant economic and financial concerns of many of our producers.

“The reality is that Farm Business Income remains worryingly low in Wales. The average for cattle and sheep farms in less favoured areas in 2016-17 was £23,100, whilst dairy farms came in at £31,300, representing a drop of 61% from £80,200 in 2013-14.

“During this time of uncertainty, I was delighted to meet with some members of Eryri Young Farmers. The work that this 420-strong group does to teach key skills and provide unique opportunities to the youngest in our rural communities is truly exceptional. Therefore, I am pleased to be offering them a helping hand by holding the Welsh Government to account and pushing the Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs to take measures to strengthen the agricultural industry and our rural communities so that our youngest generations have a more positive future in rural Wales”.
