Men working in the Welsh Government dominate higher Civil Service salary bands by more than a third compared to women, a freedom of information request has revealed.

The most recent Welsh Government's Annual Employer Equality Report shows the number of men earning between £50 and £95k is 506 whereas the figure for women is 378.

In the nine salary bands below £50k, women outnumber men by 59%.

The overall gender pay gap, according to the report, is 8% in men's favour, despite there being more 41% more female employees than male: 3,473 versus 2,468, respectively.

"The Welsh Labour administration is fond of touting itself as a progressive and modern government but when it comes to the equality of pay this just isn't true.

These figures are unsurprising when one considers that after nearly two decades of Labour dominance, Wales now has the ignominious record for having the biggest gender pay gap in the UK.

Platitudes and virtue-signalling just don't cut it. Welsh Labour is failing women and while recruitment and promotion should be based on merit, greater efforts must be made to source female talent."

– Janet Finch-Saunders AM, National Assembly for Wales' Equalities Committee
