‘Difficult settlement’ but efficiencies must not be at cost to taxpayers

Commenting on the release of the local government settlement for Conwy, Aberconwy AM and Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders, said:

“Along with Blaenau Gwent and Powys, Conwy faces the highest cut to their local government settlement by the Welsh Labour Government.

“Previous settlements have had a considerable impact on council budgets. Whilst many hoped this would encourage the local authority to examine improved efficiencies and better ways of working, unfortunately, hardworking people were forced, by the previous administration, to pay the price through deteriorating levels of service and higher bills.

“Since 1997, council tax bills in Conwy have risen by a staggering 249.25% under the leadership of the last Labour-Plaid Cabinet.

“I trust that the current Cabinet will work hard to find improved efficiencies without further cutting services or increasing bills for our residents, who are fed up of paying more and receiving less.”
