Earlier this week Janet Finch-Saunders returned to Llanrwst livestock auction and was pleased to meet Mr James Griffiths, Surveyor & Auctioneer, and numerous farmers. Her message is clear, all of us, politicians and the public, must “work to Protect and Promote Welsh hill farming”.
Janet said:
“It was invaluable visiting the mart in Llanrwst, and meeting farmers of all ages, and even their children.
“Those children and young farmers are the industry’s future, and we must all work to protect and promote Welsh hill farming for now and future generations.
“Whilst Welsh lamb was not in short supply at Llanrwst market, I am worried that not enough is being done to promote Welsh produce so that lamb finds its way onto our dining tables.
“Shockingly, we export far less mutton and lamb than we import. For example, from January to June this year the UK exported 139,130 tonnes, whilst importing 162,612!
“Time is ticking for lamb as over the past 15 years fewer people have been regularly eating the British meat, and those aged 55 years and over are making up most of the market.
“Join with me, and the Love Lamb Week Campaign in buying more Welsh lamb to help protect farming’s future”.
