Assembly Member for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, has slammed the Welsh Labour Government for failing to improve broadband provision for much of Aberconwy and north Wales.
Janet said:
“We know that average broadband speeds in Wales are the lowest of the UK regions.
“In Aberconwy, not only individual premises, but almost some whole communities are being excluded from the Superfast Cymru project, and many are unable to obtain accurate information about when they will be able to access a faster service.
“Just 60% of properties in rural Wales have access to a fixed speed of 10 Mbps, compared with 95% in urban areas.
“Disturbingly, figures released by the House of Commons Library show that Eglwysbach has one of the slowest internet speeds in the UK.
“I have been working with local residents, BT, and the Welsh Government on this issue for many months. We know that Fibre to the Premises and Fibre on Demand are feasible solutions that would enable the rural communities of Aberconwy to catch up with urban areas, yet it seems that the Welsh Government are determined to support a ‘superslow’ service. The Minister for Skills and Science only last month refusing my request that Fibre on Demand be used to connect rural premises, due to cost”.
