Aberconwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders visited Ysgol John Bright on Friday, to meet with Headteacher Ann Webb, students and teachers.

Topics on the table to be discussed were December’s forthcoming PISA results, and the potential impact of local government reform on education in north Wales.

Janet said: “It is always a pleasure to return to my former high school, and I was delighted to meet with Mrs Webb to look at ways in which we can work together to the benefit of pupils and teachers here in Ysgol John Bright and also across Aberconwy.

“Ysgol John Bright is an outstanding example of a school that is ‘getting it right’ – with pupil and teacher satisfaction clear to see. Last year’s Estyn report was promising, and exams results this summer showed more year-on-year improvement.”

Yet this is sadly not the picture across Wales, with recent figures have shown that in the last four years, the number of teachers quitting within five years of training has increased by 50%.

Janet continued:

“The Welsh Government’s recent announcement of a £800,000 plan for a ‘national network of excellence’ to support literacy and maths in Wales is welcome, however it may be too late for some.

“Dr Philip Dixon has recently voiced his concerns ahead of the forthcoming PISA results, and certainly it is expected that the Welsh Government will have a lot to answer come December.”
