Yesterday, the UK Government’s Budget failed to commit to funding defence to 3% of GDP by 2030. This is deeply concerning at a time of global uncertainty and fails to take into consideration the vital role the defence industry plays in keeping us safe and growing the economy.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy Môn, has spoken in the Senedd Chamber about the important role Wales’s defence industry plays. She commented:
“It was deeply disappointing that the Chancellor delayed outlining how he will increase defence spending to 3% of GDP until spring next year. This increase in spending is essential for our security and the Welsh economy.
“Wales already plays a significant role in the defence of the United Kingdom, and an increase in defence spending will provide greater opportunities for Wales. The defence sector will create more jobs and is an excellent partner for our colleges and universities, offering apprenticeships and training.
“I call on the First Minister to work with the UK Labour Government to ensure that these opportunities are maximised for Wales.”
