Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, was delighted to speak at the White Ribbon event on Saturday in St John’s Church, Llandudno.

The event was attended by the Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Bangor, The Most Reverend Andrew John, alongside other dignitaries and campaigners.

In North Wales alone, over 13,000 domestic abuse-related crimes were recorded in the past year. While this marks a slight decrease from the previous year, every single incident is one too many.

Commenting on the event Janet said:

“The tragic reality is that a woman loses her life to male violence every three days in the UK. One in four women in Wales will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, with 150,000 women in the country suffering from some form of gender-based violence.

“On Saturday, we commended the cross-party support in the Senedd to address this critical issue. This unity underscores the shared understanding that violence against women is a scourge we must confront together, as we seek to protect the safety and dignity of women and girls across Wales.

“My thanks to Joyce Watson, Jack Sargeant, and the late Carl Sargeant AM, for leading on this issue and of course to the Archbishop of Wales and to all who came and supported us at the event.

“It is profoundly upsetting to know that women within walking distance of our communities, our schools, and our churches are victims of violence.

“However, the overwhelming cross-party and community consensus in Wales offers hope. It demonstrates that, together, we can strive toward a future where every woman and girl can live without fear.”

ENDS

Roedd Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wrth ei bodd yn siarad yn nigwyddiad y Rhuban Gwyn ddydd Sadwrn yn Eglwys Sant Ioan, Llandudno.

Mynychwyd y digwyddiad gan Archesgob Cymru ac Esgob Bangor, Andy John, yn ogystal â phwysigion ac ymgyrchwyr eraill.

Cafodd 13,000 a mwy o droseddau yn ymwneud â cham-drin domestig eu cofnodi yn ardaloedd y Gogledd yn unig dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf. Er bod y ffigur fymryn yn llai na'r flwyddyn flaenorol, mae pob digwyddiad yn un yn ormod.

Dywedodd Janet:

“Y realiti trasig yw bod menyw yn colli ei bywyd yn sgil trais gan ddynion bob tri diwrnod yn y DU. Bydd un o bob pedair menyw yng Nghymru yn profi trais domestig yn ystod ei hoes, gyda 150,000 o fenywod yn y wlad yn dioddef o ryw fath o drais ar sail rhywedd.

“Ddydd Sadwrn, fe wnaethom ni ganmol y gefnogaeth drawsbleidiol yn y Senedd i fynd i'r afael â'r mater hollbwysig hwn. Mae'r undod hwn yn tanlinellu'r gyd-ddealltwriaeth bod trais yn erbyn menywod yn bla sy'n rhaid ei wynebu gyda'n gilydd, wrth i ni geisio amddiffyn diogelwch ac urddas menywod a merched ledled Cymru.

“Diolch i Joyce Watson a Jack Sargeant am arwain ar y mater hwn ac wrth gwrs i Archesgob Cymru ac i bawb a ddaeth i'n cefnogi yn y digwyddiad.

“Mae'n ofidus tu hwnt gwybod bod menywod o fewn pellter cerdded i'n cymunedau, i’n  hysgolion ac i’n heglwysi sy’n ddioddefwyr trais.

“Fodd bynnag, mae'r consensws trawsbleidiol a chymunedol llethol yng Nghymru yn cynnig gobaith. Mae'n dangos y gallwn, gyda'n gilydd, gamu ymlaen tuag at ddyfodol lle gall pob menyw a merch fyw heb ofn.”
