A council which caused uproar when it cut bin collections to once a month is set to raise the tax it charges for services.

Conwy’s council tax is likely to go up by 5% as local government leaders warned there could be more financial misery on the way.

The tax rise was approved by the council’s cabinet as they looked at ways to deal with the authority’s £11.3m gap in its budget, but it will need to be voted in by a full council meeting next month.

A rise of 5% is expected to raise £2.7m for the cash-strapped council, which last month agreed to bring in four-weekly bin collections .

Under the proposed rise, householders would see their council tax increase by between £43.27 and £55.63 a year, depending on the value of their property.

Cllr Sam Rowlands, the cabinet member for finance and resources, told councillors that the authority had been facing difficult financial circumstances for several years and this was likely to continue in the future.

Janet Finch-Saunders, AM for Aberconwy, slammed the planned increase.

She said: “Rather than cutting services and increasing bills, the council must look into streamlining areas of overly bureaucratic management and administration procedures, and developing innovative ways to increase funding streams and income.”
