During a debate on the impact of Welsh consumption on the globe, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, secured cross-party support for her proposal to introduce a Local Food Charter.

A Local Food Charter would be open to all shops, cafés, and restaurants selling food local to the area to sign up to. It would help consumers know which businesses are supporting local food producers.

Commenting on her proposal, Janet said:

“The Local Food Charter could be a simple system, like the food hygiene rating score on the door. It would empower customers to know whether the business they are about to enter procures local produce.

“There is no better way to support farmers, Welsh produce, and the environment than us, the people of Wales, buying Welsh.

“At present, Welsh beef imports use a land area the size of Brecon Beacons.

“A globally responsible Wales cannot pursue policies that unnecessarily cause an increase on reliance on goods from around the world. The Local Food Charter would enable each and every one of us to know whether we are buying from a business that is backing local rather than imported goods”

Yn ystod trafodaeth am effaith Cymru ar y byd, sicrhaodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Cysgodol Newid Hinsawdd, gefnogaeth drawsbleidiol i'w chynnig i gyflwyno Siarter Bwyd Lleol.

Byddai Siarter Bwyd Lleol ar agor i bob siop, caffi a bwyty sy'n gwerthu cynnyrch cynhenid yr ardal. Byddai'n helpu defnyddwyr i wybod pa fusnesau sy'n cefnogi cynhyrchwyr bwyd lleol.

Wrth sôn am ei chynnig, dywedodd Janet:

“Gallai'r Siarter Bwyd Lleol fod yn system syml, fel y sgôr hylendid bwyd ar y drws.

Byddai'n helpu cwsmeriaid i wybod a yw'r busnes dan sylw yn prynu cynnyrch lleol.

“Does dim ffordd well o gefnogi ffermwyr, cynnyrch Cymreig, a'r amgylchedd na'n bod ni, pobl Cymru, yn prynu cynnyrch Cymru.

“Ar hyn o bryd, mae mewnforion cig eidion Cymru yn defnyddio ardal tir maint Bannau Brycheiniog.

“Ni all Cymru sy'n gyfrifol yn fyd-eang, ddilyn polisïau sy'n dibynnu fwyfwy ar nwyddau o bob cwr o'r byd. Byddai'r Siarter Bwyd Lleol yn helpu pob un ohonom i wybod a ydyn ni'n prynu gan fusnes sy'n cefnogi nwyddau lleol yn hytrach na mewnforion"
