Welsh Government Urged in the Senedd to Provide Emergency Funding to Stop Hospice Closure / Galwadau yn y Senedd i Lywodraeth Cymru Ddarparu Cyllid Brys i Atal Cau Hosbis

Calls have been made in the Welsh Parliament for St David’s Hospice to be provided with emergency funding so to stop their planned temporary closure of the four Holyhead in-patient beds from October 2025.

In a statement on the mater the charity’s CEO, Gareth Jones, explained that the combination of rising running costs and reduced income have made it economically unviable to continue operating all three hospice sites — despite their best efforts to mitigate these factors.

After raising the matter in the Welsh Parliament yesterday (16/07/2025), Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS said:

“The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board received two one-off grants last year to reduce its deficit by £156.6m.

“If the Welsh Government is willing time and again to pump tens of millions extra into the North Wales health board, why not St David’s Hospice?

“Temporary closure is not a feasible option. In the short term, the Hospice should provide a clear figure as to how much is needed to keep the ward open for the remainder of this financial year, and the Welsh Government should then provide the cash. For the longer term, all stakeholders should work together to put a sustainable plan in place to commence by the start of the next financial year.

“As it stands, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care gave little hope that the temporary closure can be avoided. It can and must be for the sake of the patients, their loved ones, and the amazing staff”.

ENDS

Cafwyd galwadau yn y Senedd i ddarparu cyllid brys i Hosbis Dewi Sant er mwyn atal cau'r pedwar gwely claf mewnol yng Nghaergybi dros dro o fis Hydref 2025.

Mewn datganiad ar y mater, esboniodd Prif Swyddog Gweithredol yr elusen, Gareth Jones, fod y cyfuniad o gostau rhedeg cynyddol a llai o incwm wedi ei gwneud hi'n anhyfyw’n economaidd i barhau i weithredu pob un o dri safle’r hosbis - er gwaethaf eu hymdrechion gorau i liniaru'r ffactorau hyn.

Ar ôl codi'r mater yn y Senedd ddoe (16/07/2025), dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS:

"Derbyniodd Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr ddau grant unigol y llynedd i leihau ei ddiffyg £156.6m.

"Os yw Llywodraeth Cymru yn fodlon lluchio degau o filiynau yn ychwanegol at fwrdd iechyd Gogledd Cymru dro ar ôl tro, beth am Hosbis Dewi Sant?

"Nid yw cau dros dro yn opsiwn ymarferol. Yn y tymor byr, dylai'r Hosbis ddarparu ffigur clir ynghylch faint sydd ei angen i gadw'r ward ar agor am weddill y flwyddyn ariannol hon, a dylai Llywodraeth Cymru wedyn ddarparu'r arian. Ar gyfer y tymor hwy, dylai'r holl randdeiliaid weithio gyda'i gilydd i roi cynllun cynaliadwy ar waith erbyn dechrau'r flwyddyn ariannol nesaf.

"Fel y mae pethau, nid oedd Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Iechyd a Gofal Cymdeithasol yn rhoi fawr o obaith y gellir osgoi'r cau dros dro. Mae modd osgoi hyn a rhaid ei osgoi er mwyn y cleifion, eu hanwyliaid, a'r staff anhygoel".
