St David’s Hospice has announced the temporary closure of the four Holyhead in-patient beds from October 2025.
In a statement on the mater the charity’s CEO, Gareth Jones, explained that the combination of rising running costs and reduced income have made it economically unviable to continue operating all three hospice sites — despite their best efforts to mitigate these factors.
Commenting on the announcement, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:
“This is devastating news that will have a detrimental impact on residents across North West Wales. As such, I have this morning submitted an Emergency Question to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Welsh Government. The Llywydd will now decide if I can raise the matter with the relevant minister in the Senedd before it closes for the summer.
“St David’s Hospice is an incredible charity that provides the highest standard of care to individuals with life limiting conditions and their loves.
“The services at all three sites are needed. Temporary closure is not a feasible option.
“In the first instance, Welsh Government should assess urgently if they can intervene, at least in the short term, to keep the beds open whilst a strategy is developed with key partners to improve long term sustainability”.

Mae Hosbis Dewi Sant wedi cyhoeddi y bydd y pedwar gwely ar gyfer cleifion mewnol yng Nghaergybi yn cau dros dro o fis Hydref 2025.
Mewn datganiad ar y mater, esboniodd Prif Swyddog Gweithredol yr elusen, Gareth Jones, fod y cyfuniad o gostau rhedeg cynyddol a llai o incwm wedi’i gwneud hi'n economaidd anhyfyw i barhau i weithredu pob un o dri safle’r hosbis - er gwaethaf eu hymdrechion gorau i liniaru'r ffactorau hyn.
Gan gyfeirio at y cyhoeddiad, dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS:
"Mae hyn yn newyddion cwbl dorcalonnus a fydd yn cael effaith andwyol ar drigolion ledled y Gogledd-orllewin. Felly, y bore yma rydw i wedi cyflwyno Cwestiwn Brys i Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Iechyd a Gofal Cymdeithasol, Llywodraeth Cymru. Bydd y Llywydd nawr yn penderfynu a gaf i godi'r mater gyda'r gweinidog perthnasol yn y Senedd cyn iddo gau ar gyfer yr haf.
"Mae Hosbis Dewi Sant yn elusen anhygoel sy'n darparu gofal o’r safon uchaf i unigolion sydd â chyflyrau sy'n cyfyngu ar fywyd ac i’w hanwyliaid.
"Mae angen y gwasanaethau hyn ym mhob un o'r tri safle. Dydy cau dros dro ddim yn opsiwn ymarferol.
"Yn y lle cyntaf, dylai Llywodraeth Cymru asesu ar unwaith a all ymyrryd, o leiaf yn y tymor byr, i gadw'r gwelyau ar agor tra bod strategaeth yn cael ei datblygu gyda phartneriaid allweddol i wella cynaliadwyedd hirdymor".
