Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy highlighted yesterday in a statement to the Senedd the Welsh Government’s slow progress in addressing fire safety remediation work on private buildings, underscoring the urgent need for quicker action.
Earlier this week, it was revealed in a response from the Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government that, of the 238 private tenure buildings identified for essential fire safety work, only 3 have been fully remediated.
The fact that less than 2% of these buildings have completed the necessary work raises serious concerns about the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of residents. This lack of progress undermines the urgency that the situation demands and leaves thousands of people at risk.
Commenting on the statement Janet said:
“This is an issue I have been highlighting for many years now. Work on this has continually been very slow and painful.
“At the start of September, I highlighted the concerning fact that 53 buildings still remain unidentified for any necessary remediation work. Despite the urgency of fire safety concerns, these properties continue to be overlooked, further delaying the vital steps needed to safeguard residents.
“Now we are seeing a success rate of 1.26%, raising significant questions about the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of residents.
“In reply to my statement the Welsh Government responded by saying they were committed to delivering a Building Safety (Wales) Bill by the end of this Senedd term.
“I have therefore requested a statement from the Cabinet Secretary on the steps the Welsh Government intends to take to accelerate the necessary work. I have been assured that a written statement will be issued this week in response to the Grenfell Phase 2 report, outlining the actions being undertaken in Wales to address fire safety concerns.”

Ddoe mewn datganiad i’r Senedd, fe wnaeth Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, dynnu sylw at gynnydd araf Llywodraeth Cymru yn mynd i'r afael â gwaith adfer diogelwch tân ar adeiladau preifat, gan bwysleisio'r angen brys i weithredu'n gynt.
Yn gynharach yr wythnos hon, datgelwyd mewn ymateb gan Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Lywodraeth Leol a Thai mai dim ond 3 o'r 238 adeilad daliadaeth preifat a nodwyd ar gyfer gwaith diogelwch tân hanfodol sydd wedi'u hadfer yn llawn.
Mae'r ffaith bod llai na 2% o'r adeiladau hyn wedi cael eu hadfer yn codi pryderon difrifol am ymrwymiad y llywodraeth i sicrhau diogelwch preswylwyr. Mae'r diffyg cynnydd hwn yn tanseilio brys y sefyllfa ac mae’n gadael miloedd o bobl mewn perygl.
Wrth sôn am y datganiad dywedodd Janet:
"Mae’n fater rydw i wedi bod yn tynnu sylw ato ers blynyddoedd bellach. Mae'r gwaith ar hyn wedi bod yn araf a phoenus.
"Ddechrau mis Medi, fe wnes i dynnu sylw at y ffaith dorcalonnus fod 53 adeilad yn dal heb eu nodi fel rhai sydd angen gwaith adfer angenrheidiol. Er gwaethaf elfen frys y pryderon diogelwch tân, mae'r eiddo hyn yn parhau i gael eu hanwybyddu, gan ohirio ymhellach y camau hanfodol sydd eu hangen i ddiogelu preswylwyr.
"Nawr rydyn ni’n gweld cyfradd lwyddiant o 1.26%, sy’n codi cwestiynau sylweddol am ymrwymiad y llywodraeth i sicrhau diogelwch preswylwyr.
"Mewn ymateb i'm datganiad, ymatebodd Llywodraeth Cymru drwy ddweud eu bod wedi ymrwymo i ddarparu Bil Diogelwch Adeiladau (Cymru) erbyn diwedd tymor y Senedd hon.
"Rydw i felly wedi gofyn am ddatganiad gan Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet ar y camau y mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn bwriadu eu cymryd i gyflymu'r gwaith angenrheidiol. Rydw i wedi cael sicrwydd y bydd datganiad ysgrifenedig yn cael ei gyhoeddi yr wythnos hon mewn ymateb i adroddiad Cam 2 Grenfell, gan amlinellu'r camau sy'n cael eu cymryd yng Nghymru i fynd i'r afael â phryderon diogelwch tân."
