Welsh Government Held to Account in the Senedd for Scrapping A55 Roundabouts Removal

Further to the Welsh Government decision to scrap plans to remove roundabouts on the A55 in Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr, Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has made a successful request for a Topical Question on the matter, and scrutinised Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change, in the Senedd today.

Following her contribution in the Senedd, Janet said:

“The Welsh Government’s own reports highlight safety concerns as there is non-compliance with current design standards; traffic delays as a result of poor network resilience; a lack of suitable diversion routes in cases of tunnel maintenance, road repairs, and accidents on the A55; poor sustainable travel options; poor coastal access; and safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.

“To date, approximately £9 million has been spent on solutions to those problems, but that money has been completely wasted.

“The Deputy Minister seems to be doing this in the name of climate change, yet his decision will see a continuation of queues on the roads joining the roundabouts, and cars idling emitting volumes of carbon monoxide, effecting the quality of the very air we breathe.

“His decision is yet another Welsh Government car crash, adding to the axed Llanbedr bypass which has cost taxpayers nearly £1.7m, and the M4 relief road which saw £157million wasted on a public inquiry”.
