Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is disappointed to hear that the Welsh Government has no immediate plans to remove the dangerous roundabouts on the A55 in Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan.
In response to a question to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates MS, the Welsh Government stated that the scheme, as developed in 2021/22, should not proceed. However, frustratingly they did go on to say that they did recognise that there is a case for intervention on the A55.
The Welsh Government’s own 2021/22 reports raised concerns about safety due to non-compliance with design standards, traffic delays from poor network resilience, limited diversion routes for A55 maintenance, inadequate sustainable travel options, poor coastal access, and risks to pedestrians and cyclists.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“This saga has been going on now for over a decade, reports have been written, plans have been drawn up and pledges have been made. Yet, we are still having the same conversation with the same rebuttal from the Welsh Government.
“Despite the clear and urgent safety case for the removal of the roundabouts, as admitted by the Welsh Government, they still find reasons to refuse committing to any sustainable solution.
“More delays from the Welsh Government are setting the stage for more motorist misery. Up until two years ago, around £9 million had been spent on plans and reports. Had the Welsh Government committed when the opportunity arose, that money could have gone towards the project.
“If they recognise that there is a case for intervention why can’t they put the money where their mouth is and intervene?
“I urge the Welsh Government to commit to making the lives of North Walians smoother and stress free.”

- Written Question Response from Ken Skates MS on 02/09/2024
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, yn siomedig o glywed nad oes cynlluniau uniongyrchol gan Lywodraeth Cymru i gael gwared ar y cylchfannau peryglus ar yr A55.
Mewn ymateb i gwestiwn i Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Drafnidiaeth, Ken Skates AS, dywedodd Llywodraeth Cymru na ddylai'r cynllun, fel y'i datblygwyd yn 2021/22, fynd yn ei flaen. Fodd bynnag, roedd yn rhwystredig clywed wrth i’r drafodaeth fynd rhagddi fod y Llywodraeth yn cydnabod bod achos dros ymyrryd ar yr A55.
Cododd adroddiadau Llywodraeth Cymru ei hun ar gyfer 2021/22 bryderon am ddiogelwch yn sgil diffyg cydymffurfio â safonau cynllunio, oedi traffig o ganlyniad i wytnwch rhwydwaith gwael, llwybrau gwyro cyfyngedig ar gyfer cynnal a chadw ar yr A55, opsiynau teithio cynaliadwy annigonol, mynediad gwael at yr arfordir, a risgiau i gerddwyr a beicwyr.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:
"Mae'r saga hon wedi bod yn mynd ymlaen nawr ers dros ddegawd, mae adroddiadau wedi eu hysgrifennu, cynlluniau wedi eu llunio ac addewidion wedi’u derbyn. Ac eto, rydyn ni’n dal i gael yr un sgwrs a'r un safbwynt gan Lywodraeth Cymru.
"Er gwaethaf yr achos clir a brys dros gael gwared ar y cylchfannau o ran diogelwch, fel y cyfaddefwyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru, maen nhw’n dal i ganfod rhesymau dros wrthod ymrwymo i unrhyw ddatrysiad cynaliadwy.
"Mae rhagor o oedi gan Lywodraeth Cymru yn gosod y llwyfan ar gyfer mwy o ddiflastod i fodurwyr. Hyd at ddwy flynedd yn ôl, gwariwyd tua £9 miliwn ar gynlluniau ac adroddiadau. Pe bai Llywodraeth Cymru wedi ymrwymo pan gododd y cyfle, gallai'r arian hwnnw fod wedi mynd tuag at y prosiect.
"Os ydyn nhw'n cydnabod bod yna achos dros ymyrryd, pam na allan nhw ddangos hynny drwy wario’r arian ac ymyrryd nawr?
"Rwy'n annog Llywodraeth Cymru i ymrwymo i wneud bywydau pobl yn y gogledd yn haws gyda llai o straen."
