The UK Labour Government has announced plans to ease sanctions on Russian oil, despite the UK signing a G7 statement reaffirming its commitment to imposing severe costs on Russia.
Meanwhile, domestic oil resources off the Welsh coast and in Aberdeen could be used instead of importing oil from Russia.
The Leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch MP, noted that this comes at a time where the UK is “losing a 1,000 jobs a month in oil and gas.”
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Conwy Bangor Môn, and the Welsh Conservative, Shadow Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, said:
“As the cost of living continues to rise due to conflicts around the world, it is more important than ever that we focus on domestic energy and oil production.
“For too long, we have relied on imports from other nations, and residents have paid the financial price. Wales, and the UK as a whole, has the potential to generate its own fuel and energy, greatly improving our long-term sustainability.
“The watering down of these sanctions is deeply concerning, particularly as there are no safeguards in place to prevent this money from funding Russia’s war in Ukraine.”

Mae Llywodraeth Lafur y DU wedi cyhoeddi cynlluniau i leddfu sancsiynau ar olew Rwsia, er gwaethaf y ffaith bod y DU wedi llofnodi datganiad G7 yn ailddatgan ei hymrwymiad i osod sancsiynau difrifol ar Rwsia.
Yn y cyfamser, gellid defnyddio adnoddau olew domestig oddi ar arfordir Cymru ac yn Aberdeen yn hytrach na mewnforio olew o Rwsia.
Nododd Arweinydd y Blaid Geidwadol, Kemi Badenoch AS, fod hyn yn dod ar adeg pan mae'r DU yn “colli 1,000 o swyddi y mis yn y sectorau olew a nwy.”
Dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Conwy Bangor Môn, a Gweinidog Cysgodol y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Fenter, Cysylltedd ac Ynni:
“Wrth i gostau byw barhau i godi oherwydd gwrthdaro ledled y byd, mae'n bwysicach nag erioed ein bod ni'n canolbwyntio ar gynhyrchu ynni ac olew domestig.
“Rydyn ni wedi bod yn dibynnu ar fewnforion o wledydd eraill ers tro byd, ac mae pobl Cymru wedi talu pris uchel. Mae gan Gymru, a'r DU gyfan, y potensial i gynhyrchu ei thanwydd a'i hynni ei hun, gan wella ein cynaliadwyedd hirdymor yn sylweddol.
“Mae'r penderfyniad i leddfu'r sancsiynau hyn yn peri pryder mawr, yn enwedig gan nad oes unrhyw fesurau diogelu ar waith i atal yr arian hwn rhag ariannu rhyfel Rwsia yn Wcráin.”
