Yesterday, it was reported that millions of plastic pellets, washed up on an East Sussex beach, had escaped from a wastewater treatment works.
However, it was only in October that plastic discs from a wastewater treatment works in Swansea washed up on beaches in Gower and Neath Port Talbot.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and the Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, commented:
“At a time when we are all making changes to our daily lives and passing legislation to move away from the use of single-use plastics, due to the negative impacts they have on our environment, the release of small and micro-sized plastics into our waters by water companies is completely unacceptable.
“While the water companies did claim responsibility and provided an explanation of how this happened, it raises many questions about what measures are in place to prevent such a leak.
“I call on the water companies, as well as the Welsh and UK Governments, to provide assurance that measures are in place to prevent leaks like these, and to confirm what reviews are being conducted into how such incidents can be avoided in the future.”

Ddoe, adroddwyd bod miliynau o belenni plastig a oedd wedi’u golchi ar draeth yn Nwyrain Sussex wedi dianc o waith trin dŵr gwastraff.
Fodd bynnag, dim ond ym mis Hydref y golchwyd disgiau plastig o waith trin dŵr gwastraff yn Abertawe ar draethau Gŵyr a Chastell-nedd Port Talbot.
Dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy a Gweinidog Gwrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Newid Hinsawdd a’r Amgylchedd:
“Ar adeg pan rydyn ni i gyd yn gwneud newidiadau i’n bywydau bob dydd ac yn pasio deddfwriaeth i symud i ffwrdd o’r defnydd o blastigau untro, oherwydd yr effeithiau negyddol maen nhw’n eu cael ar ein hamgylchedd, mae clywed am gwmnïau dŵr yn rhyddhau plastigau bach a micro i’n dyfroedd yn gwbl annerbyniol.
“Er bod y cwmnïau dŵr wedi hawlio cyfrifoldeb ac wedi cynnig esboniad o sut ddigwyddodd hyn, mae’n codi llawer o gwestiynau ynghylch pa fesurau sydd ar waith i atal gollyngiad o’r fath.
“Rwy’n galw ar y cwmnïau dŵr, yn ogystal â Llywodraeth Cymru a Llywodraeth y DU, i roi sicrwydd bod mesurau ar waith i atal gollyngiadau fel hyn, ac i gadarnhau pa adolygiadau sy’n cael eu cynnal ar sut gellir osgoi digwyddiadau o’r fath yn y dyfodol.”
