Wales’ World Class Recycling but Businesses are Struggling with New Recycling Laws

Bins

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy spoke up about the difficulty of some businesses, especially in Aberconwy, who are struggling with the new recycling laws in Wales.

Following a statement by the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs on Wales' World Class Recycling, Janet has praised the people of Wales for their efforts in getting Wales to 2nd place for recycling in the world.

However, new recycling laws brought in April this year have been causing undue anxiety and stress for businesses across North Wales. All businesses, charities and public sector organisations now have to more widely sort their waste for recycling. This requires them to have as many as 6 different bins.

Commenting on this, Janet said:

“I am extremely proud of everyone in Wales who has made the effort to get Wales to the number 2 spot for recycling in the World, behind only Austria.

“Wales has a proud history of recycling. However, while recycling is undoubtedly a great policy that we all support, it has now become an overly complicated game of guessing the right bin, which will only frustrate people as they navigate their busy lives.

“Businesses with outdoor space are facing large areas being filled with numerous bins, while those without extra room for additional rubbish receptacles are being overlooked.

“Moreover, businesses are concerned that bins may be abused by others, throwing their general rubbish into recycling bins, making the businesses liable for fines.

“I voted and spoke out against the new business recycling rules. Now that they have been implemented, I believe more than ever that these regulations need to be scrapped."
