Today marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which celebrates the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany’s unconditional surrender.

Over the week many people across the whole country are gathering at events to mark the occasion, including beacon lighting, church services, and street parties, very much in the same way that people did 80 years ago.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has marked the day reflecting on the sacrifices that were made during the war to ensure that we maintained our freedoms.

Commenting on the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Janet said:

“While we use this day to celebrate the Allies victory, we must also use this anniversary to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Around 15,000 Welshmen were killed during the Second World War. What is even more striking are the ages that some of these men were when they lost their lives.

“In Llandudno, one young man was died aged 17, along with many others in their late teens, twenties and thirties.

“It is vital that we remember them today, and thank all that served for their bravery to fight for our freedoms and to keep us safe”.

Mae heddiw yn nodi 80 mlynedd ers Diwrnod Buddugoliaeth yn Ewrop, sy’n dathlu derbyn yn ffurfiol ildio diamod yr Almaen gan Gynghreiriaid yr Ail Ryfel Byd.

Yn ystod yr wythnos, mae llawer o bobl ledled y wlad yn ymgynnull mewn digwyddiadau i nodi’r achlysur, gan gynnwys tanio goleufâu, gwasanaethau eglwysig a phartïon stryd, yn debyg iawn i’r hyn a wnaeth pobl 80 mlynedd yn ôl.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi nodi’r diwrnod drwy fyfyrio ar yr aberth a wnaed yn ystod y rhyfel i sicrhau ein bod ni’n cadw ein rhyddid.

Wrth sôn am 80 mlwyddiant Diwrnod VE, dywedodd Janet:

“Er ein bod ni’n dathlu buddugoliaeth y Cynghreiriaid ar y diwrnod hwn, mae’n rhaid i ni hefyd ddefnyddio’r achlysur i gofio’r rhai a wnaeth yr aberth eithaf.

“Lladdwyd tua 15,000 o Gymry yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Yr hyn sydd hyd yn oed yn fwy trawiadol yw oed rhai o’r dynion hyn pan gollon nhw eu bywydau.

“Collodd un llanc 17 oed o Landudno ei fywyd, ynghyd â llawer iawn yn eu harddegau hwyr, eu hugeiniau a’u tridegau.

“Mae’n hollbwysig i ni eu cofio heddiw, a diolch i bawb a wasanaethodd am eu dewrder wrth frwydro dros ein rhyddid ac i’n cadw ni’n ddiogel”.
