Urgent Need for Strep A and Scarlet Fever Guidance

Janet Finch-Saunders MS has asked the Welsh Government for urgent guidance concerning the Strep A and Scarlet Fever outbreak among children across Wales.

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has asked the Minister for Health for a statement on the outbreak of cases of Strep A and Scarlet Fever in Wales.

It comes amid the tragic news that nine children in the UK have so far lost their lives to Strep A and Scarlet Fever in the latest outbreak.

The updated UK guidance on scarlet fever outbreaks, which are caused by Strep A, says antibiotics can be used to help stop new cases of Strep A in settings such as schools, but a decision should be taken with local outbreak-control teams on "a case-by-case basis".

Speaking in the Senedd chamber, Janet said:

“The ongoing cases of Strep A, and the Scarlet fever that it can cause, have so far claimed the lives of nine children. This is an appalling tragedy, and my heart goes out to each and every single grieving parent.

“It has also left many families deeply worried as to what they should do next. Coming at the worst possible time of the year, it’s absolutely crucial that there is clear guidance in place about how to keep children safe.

“I think it’s really important that we have a consistent, joined-up approach across all parts of the UK, so that parents and schools alike can receive the clearest advice possible information about what to do.

“I hope the Minister can commit to ensuring that pharmacies have enough medical supplies in place if this proves necessary, and ensure parents and teachers receive the clearest possible guidance”.
