Urgent call for Conwy economy boost

Friday, 6 January, 2012

Reacting to the news that Conwy has suffered the worst decline in living standards and average annual income for all of Wales since the recession, Cllr Janet Finch-Saunders AM said:

"This is proof, if proof were needed, that the Welsh Government is not doing enough to support their people.

"A 6.7% drop in annual income across Wales is shameful, but a 15.8% drop in Conwy is quite simply shocking.

"This Welsh Labour Government needs to buck up its ideas and really focus on growing our economy. Conwy has a fantastic community of SMEs and, given the right support, has the potential to completely turn these figures around.

"I will continue to call on the Welsh Government to introduce business rate relief, as has been done so successfully in England."

Galwad Brys am hwb economaidd i Gonwy

Wrth ymateb i’r newyddion bod Sir Conwy wedi dioddef y dirywiad gwaethaf mewn safonau byw ac incwm cyfartalog yng Nghymru yn ystod y dirwasgiad, dywedodd Cyng. Janet Finch-Saunders AC:

"Mae hyn y dystiolaeth, os oedd angen unrhyw dystiolaeth, bod y Llywodraeth Cymraeg ddim yn gwneud digon i gefnogi pobl.

"Mae gostyngiad o 6.7% mewn incwm blynyddol ar draws Cymru yn warthus, ond mae gostyngiad o 15.8% yn Sir Conwy yn syfrdanol.

Mae angen i’r Llywodraeth Llafur ail-ystyried eu syniadau a dechrau ffocysu o ddifri ar dyfi ein heconomi. Mae gan Gonwy nifer o BBaChau ardderchog ac, efo’r gefnogaeth iawn, mae ganddynt yr potential i droi’r ffigurau yma o gwmpas.

Mi wnaf barhau i alw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gyflwyno cynllun rhyddhad ardrethi busnes, gan ddilyn esiampl lwyddiannus o gynllun tebyg yn Lloegr."

Statistics from GMB Trade Union:

Annual income in Conwy is £141 less than 2007

(£26,227 in 2007 - £26,086 in 2011)

Taking inflation into account, this equates to a 15.8% drop

The drop for Wales as a whole is 6.7%; for the UK 5.9%
