Inflation decreased to 2.8%, down from a rate of 3% in January, according to the Office for National Statistics. This is still above the Bank of England's target of 2%.

Women's clothing was the biggest driver for this month's fall. There was an unseasonably high number of clothing sales.

However, it is expected that the rate at which prices rise will increase next month, in the new financial year for several reasons:

  • Council tax bills are rising in Wales by an average of 7.21%
  • Energy bills are rising by with the cap increased by 6.4%
  • Water bills in Wales are rising by 27%
  • National Living Wage increasing by £0.77 to £12.21
  • Changes to national insurance

Commenting on the state of the economy, Janet said:

“We have gone from growth of 0.8% in the first quarter of 2024 to a 0.1% decrease in January 2025.

“Things are already bad now, but they could get considerably worse.

“61% of businesses are expected to raise prices and 54% are looking at lowering employment.

“The Chancellor may think that the fall in interest rates today gives her some breathing space, but it doesn’t. Cost are set to increase next month, and business is in decline.

“The crisis should be turned around with a pro-economy, pro-business, spring statement and policies”.

ENDS

Mae chwyddiant wedi disgyn i 2.8%, i lawr o 3% ym mis Ionawr, yn ôl y Swyddfa Ystadegau Gwladol. Mae hyn yn dal i fod yn uwch na tharged Banc Lloegr o 2%.

Gwerthiant dillad menywod oedd y rheswm pennaf dros y cwymp y mis hwn. Cafwyd gwerthiant dillad annhymhorol o uchel.

Fodd bynnag, disgwylir y bydd y gyfradd y mae prisiau'n codi yn cynyddu fis nesaf, yn y flwyddyn ariannol newydd am sawl rheswm:
-    Mae biliau'r dreth gyngor yn codi 7.21% ar gyfartaledd yng Nghymru
-    Mae biliau ynni yn codi gyda'r cap yn cynyddu gan 6.4%
-    Mae biliau dŵr yng Nghymru yn codi 27%
-    Mae’r Cyflog Byw Cenedlaethol yn cynyddu £0.77 i £12.21
-    Newidiadau i yswiriant gwladol

Wrth sôn am gyflwr yr economi, dywedodd Janet:

"Rydyn ni wedi mynd o dwf o 0.8% yn chwarter cyntaf 2024 i ostyngiad o 0.1% ym mis Ionawr 2025.

"Mae pethau eisoes yn ddrwg, ond gallent waethygu’n sylweddol.

"Mae disgwyl i 61% o fusnesau godi eu prisiau ac mae 54% yn edrych ar ostwng cyflogaeth.

"Efallai y bydd y Canghellor o’r farn bod y cwymp mewn cyfraddau llog heddiw yn rhoi mymryn o gyfle iddi anadlu, ond does fawr o obaith am hynny. Disgwylir i'r gost gynyddu fis nesaf, ac mae busnes ar i lawr.

"Dylid troi'r argyfwng ar ei ben gyda datganiad y Gwanwyn a pholisïau sydd o blaid yr economi ac o blaid busnes".
