The UK Labour Government has dropped plans to initiate a mandatory Digital ID programme that would requite all workers in the UK to sign up to the scheme and prove right to work. Registering to the scheme in 2029 will now be optional.
This has become one of Labour’s biggest U-Turn’s in Government due to Keir Starmer and his ministers being adamant that this policy would help the illegal immigration programme and that all UK Citizens must sign up to the scheme, or else face fines.
Instead, the scheme will allegedly deal less with immigration and more with the public accessing public services.
This policy change has been one of many that have been reversed, others include the welfare reforms, the winter fuel payments, and inheritance tax for farmers.

“I welcome the UK Government’s decision to finally drop this misguided scheme, which would have done little more than increase state control over UK citizens.
The policy would have made no meaningful difference in tackling illegal immigration, while the threat of fines made it unnecessarily heavy handed.
This U-turn is yet another example of a government lacking a clear strategy. It highlights a failure to understand how to address illegal immigration effectively.
Rather than attempting to revive outdated, rejected policies from the Tony Blair era, the Government should focus on the challenges we face today.”

Dyma un o droeon pedol mwyaf Llafur yn y Llywodraeth, gyda Keir Starmer a'i weinidogion wedi credu’n sicr y byddai'r polisi hwn yn helpu'r rhaglen mewnfudo anghyfreithlon ac yn gorfodi holl ddinasyddion y DU i gofrestru i'r cynllun, neu fel arall wynebu dirwyon.
Yn hytrach, honnir y bydd y cynllun yn delio llai â mewnfudo a mwy â’r cyhoedd yn cael mynediad at wasanaethau cyhoeddus.
Mae'r newid polisi hwn wedi bod yn un o blith llawer sydd wedi'u rhoi o’r neilltu, gydag eraill yn cynnwys y diwygiadau lles, taliadau tanwydd y gaeaf, a threth etifeddiant i ffermwyr.
Meddai Janet:
"Rwy'n croesawu penderfyniad Llywodraeth y DU i roi'r gorau i'r cynllun camarweiniol hwn o'r diwedd, a fyddai wedi gwneud dim mwy na chynyddu rheolaeth y wladwriaeth dros ddinasyddion y DU.
Ni fyddai'r polisi wedi gwneud unrhyw wahaniaeth ystyrlon wrth fynd i'r afael â mewnfudo anghyfreithlon, tra byddai’r bygythiad o ddirwyon yn golygu ei fod yn llawdrwm dros ben.
Mae'r tro pedol hwn yn enghraifft arall o lywodraeth heb strategaeth glir. Mae'n tynnu sylw at fethiant i ddeall sut i fynd i'r afael â mewnfudo anghyfreithlon yn effeithiol.
Yn hytrach na cheisio adfywio polisïau sydd wedi dyddio, polisïau a wrthodwyd yng nghyfnod Tony Blair, dylai'r Llywodraeth ganolbwyntio ar yr heriau rydyn ni'n eu hwynebu heddiw."
